I think what is happening here is you are bypassing the pressure drop across
the filter in addition to a bit of ram and cooler air effect. If you tape up over
the filter you will probably see even more increase in manifold
pressure and power. Assuming of course you can keep the mixture in the
right range. Mooney used this trick for years and Tracy Crook is
running his engine without air filter and a ram scoop. Perry and
George Graham both noticed an increase in power when they bypassed
the air filter.
BTW in regard to Ken running a 2.95 to one psru ratio and high RPMs.
The Mazda wankel engine has minimum bearing loads at about 6000 RPM
so that is the optimum cruse RPM for a rotary engine.
The corresponding number for a piston engine is 3600 RPM.
This is where the compression forces balance the centrifugal
and inertia loads. This gives the rotary an intrinsic power to weight
ratio advantage besides all the other things it has going for it in regard
to power to weight ratio.
