Ken, I think you are dead on here.  This is also a reason why to turbocharge your rotary, you could think of the area between the exhaust port and the turbine as a secondary combustion chamber.

Combustion temps are lower, if I had a cool file system like Paul's I could tell you exactly how much lower, I believe on the order of 300 degrees F lower than a piston engine.
