Stopped by the auto transmission parts store today
and priced a Ford six pinion planet carrier with
pinions. $75!! Can't beat the prices to overhaul your own gear box.
Will bolt right in to Tracy's Redrive. The Ross may take a
bit of rework. Same price for the 2.17:1 or the 2.85:1 set.
Tracy rates this Jewel at 300 HP in his box.

I am working on getting info on the Allison planetary which
should be good to about 600 HP.

Hi Paul just two quick questions
1) Out off what vehicle does the planetary drive come from?
2) (Out off interest/ignorance) Can we not use vacuum from the intake
manifold to drive our instruments?

Thanks for the Newsletter.
Patrick.

The Ford transmission is the C5, C6 and later versions such as E4OD or something
like that. These are used with many Ford V8s and V10s. The C5, C6 versions
date back perhaps 30 years or more. Full size cars, limo's, police cars,
sport utes and large pickup trucks. I saw a V10 engine installed in a police
car at the LA auto show :-) (You don't want to mess with that) The six pinion
was probably developed for the diesel and V10 engines installed in heavy
duty pick up trucks.

The Subject: very late update on 97 E4OD, diesel

Hi Wrote a long time ago about this truck (F350 crew cab
4x4), with erratic converter lock/unlock/lock during
shifts. Finally found problem, replace PCM. Removed '97
spec (code TDE0) PCM.

Installed 1995 spec (code TEE5) reman PCM, and unit now
shifts normally. Will stay unlocked until O/D under light
throttle and will lock in 2,3,4 under heavy acceleration,
also it shifts faster and firmer.

Not to mention the extra power the motor now has using the
'95 spec programming. Driver is VERY happy with the truck
now.

The Subject: E40D Intermittent No Forward Engagement

Hope somebody can give me some advise here. Vehicle is a
'95 Super Duty with the 7.3L/E40D. About 3 or 4 times a day
the trans will fail to engage when shifted into drive.
Revving the engine to about 3000 RPM will cause it slam
into gear. Problem lasts only a few minutes and trans
operates normally otherwise. Reverse engages properly when
problem is occuring; only the forward gears are affected. I
haven't been able to get a scanner and pressure gauge on it
when problem is happening, but pressures and scan data look
normal all other times. Problem only occurs after vehicle
has been driven over a few hours and trans is hot. Filter
and fluid are new and valve body/solenoid assy. bolts are
tight. We usually send our trans problems out to a trans
shop, but I'm trying to get started repairing these things.
I have a reman sitting on the shop floor ready for
installation, but I want to be sure that this isn't a
simple problem. All replies are appreciated.

Note this one lasted five years with the four pinion and the 7.3 L diesel.
