The big problem with note book computers is the low brightness of the
display. Hard to see in sun light. You might be able to build your own
florescent back light to up the brightness.     If you go the mother
board route you can buy a new Samsung  flat panel with high brightness
for about $300 and connect it directly to a super VGA card plugged
into the stock mother board. If note books are real cheap that might
be a source for a cheap DC to DC converter.

Anyone know how the spec of 330:1 contrast ratio corresponds to 1500 nit
needed for daylight viewable?  Better yet, has anyone had a chance to
see a 330:1 CR in daylight?  I assume that none of them are visible when
sunlight is shining directly on the LCD.

Apples and oranges I think. Brightness and contrast are separate
characteristics. Contrast is the ratio of dark to light.
Both are important of course.

I have seen some 800 nits displays and they look pretty good in sunlight
to me.
