The chute is intended for loss of control, loss of
a wing, etc.  The literature essentially says you
will probably get hurt if you use it, with the clear
implication that if the airplane is still gliding under
control and you can see where you are going,
don't use the chute.  When DO you use the chute?
When a wing comes off, or you're out of gas
and the viz is 1/4 mile in fog or at night, or the
gyro packs in during serious IMC to the ground.

I considered a ballistic chute for my plane.  The last thing I
would expect is a wing coming off, I wanted it in case of
engine failure over the Rocky Mountains!

Check out the descent rate with the chute.  It is high!  They
have energy absorbing seats and still say you should expect
to get hurt some.  Better than splattered, worse than a nice
off-field landing.
