A search on Ebay.com for Laptops & Accessories will reveal many (1000's?)
laptop components.  I saw many motherboards and keyboards combo's going for
$9.

The big problem with note book computers is the low brightness of the
display. Hard to see in sun light. You might be able to build your own 
florescent back light to up the brightness. 	If you go the mother
board route you can buy a new Samsung  flat panel with high brightness
for about $300 and connect it directly to a super VGA card plugged
into the stock mother board. If note books are real cheap that might
be a source for a cheap DC to DC converter.
