I'm confused about this.  Is an air pump *also* a vacuum pump of
necessity?  Or is it a commonly accepted aviation term (jargon?)

Btw, Marc, I like the fact that your air pump is 1/2 the weight of the
Cadillac version.  If it works for you, I'll need to get one.

Most positive displacement air pumps work as vacuum pumps. At least a smog pump does.
An example of a non positive displacement air pump is a centrifugal pump
like a turbo charger. If you try to pull a vacuum the centrifugal pump
may stall.
