I have used the Mazda Smog/air pump as a vacuum source for over two years in
my RV-6A.  I orginally tried aircraft pumps and went through two in six
months before switching to the air pump which works great even at idle rpm.
I really sucks so you need a vacuum regulator to keep it within perscribed
limits for the gauges.  The only down side is it weighs almost 9 lbs.
