OK I get the feeling nobody is going to guess
what I have in mind.
Absolutely the cheapest way to do an EFIS is use
voice synthesizing
technology. No expensive LCD, LED or PDA at all.
Although bar graph LEDs are a very cheap way to
go but they do take
up space on the instrument panel and suck power.
Everybody that flies an airplane has a head set.
"Your EGT on rotor one is 1400 degrees."
"Your EGT on rotor two is 1450 degrees."
"Your coolant temp is 220 degrees."
"Your oil pressure is 80 psi."
"etc., etc., etc.."
You could push one of several buttons each with
different info on
the stick or on the instrument panel to get the
info when you
wanted it or allow the system to inform you when
something went
out of preset limits. If something started
changing too
fast it could warn you automatically.
It could also work as a stall warning.
"PUSH THE STICK YOU ARE GOING TO STALL!"
"PUSH THE STICK YOU ARE GOING TO STALL!"
"PUSH THE STICK YOU ARE GOING TO STALL!"
The possibilities are infinite. The cost and
panel space are minimal.

With a solid state gyro you could have your own
personal on-board flight
instructor. I can hear it now...
"PULL UP YOU'RE TOO LOW! PAY ATTENTION!"
"NO, YOU PULLED UP TOO MUCH, NOW YOU'RE TOO HIGH!"
"YOU'RE TOO SLOW, YOU'RE GOING TO STALL!"
"WATCH FOR TRAFFIC!"
"#&%*#@*&%....
Are we getting creative now or what? :-)>

Hey Gang,
Being from the old school and I do mean old!..
Paul the problem with audio. The FAA requires us to
have one oil pressure direct reading instrument for
each engine installed, same for temp, tach and gas
gauge etc: and on and on.
I like to see as well as hear. Heck one of my two
senses could just quit anytime!..ouch but both visual
and audio together would be fantastic. I like a
cluttered panel it makes my walter mitty come out. (I
drive a varieze). Now if someone would come up with a
"heads up display" at a reasonable price!!..hummm how
bout a back lighted LCD laid on it's back with a
polished piece of plexi set at a angle for a
reflector?..
John, frozen in KY.
Does that FAA rule apply to experimental airplanes?
