        John that is a good idea. If it is dark under the
cowl, then the readout will not show anything.
When a fire starts then the end of the fibre optic
in the cockpit shows orange or red. BINGO time!

Guys, there will be smoke long before there is fire, if oily

smoke then a lot of soot or smudge on optics even if there is
much airflow.

Put the video cameras out on the wings looking at the pusher cowling.
They should see any smoke coming out of the pusher cowling.

I was once thinking (for about 30 seconds) of using a stock transmission a
la George Graham, but leaving ALL the gears in and putting a clutch next to
the rudder pedals. This way you'd really have a reverse, plus you could
change down for the climb and shift to a higher more economical gear for
cruise. Discretion got the better part of innovation, and I bought Tracy's
RD-1B redrive. Pity. No reverse.
