In the enclosed picture, you have a square plate with some tube or fitting
protruding. can you give more details on how this is fabricated? is the motor
mount tube then just butt welded to the plate? If so,that doesn't seem like
much weld strength, compared to a weld to a stub.

Yes they were butt welded than four small triangular gussets were used. Make
the plates a bit bigger. I think these were two by two but something
like 2.5 by 2.5 would work better.

The welding jig shown turned out to be a disaster. I no longer recommend
it.

Here is a picture of Jerry's Hey's welding jig. Since he is building 
a similar one for the Tail Wind. I think we can talk him into building a jig for 
the simple dual tripod mounts like you and I use on the Cruiser.
