The timing split is mainly for EPA emissions reasons.  I run the timing on
leading & trailing virtually the same.  Just enough delay to minimize
electrical noise (< 1/2 degree of crank time).  This gives lower EGTs and
slightly better power, especially in the event of leading coil or plug
failure.
