 From this it looks like the oil metering pump gets oil from the top oil
gallery.

I think this figure shows the flow path clearer, but I am still puzzled by
what is being bypassed in the change. Is it the flow restriction in the front
cover, or the replacement of the banjo fittings that caused a greater flow
and therefore better cooling?

A bit of both I suspect Bill. It is a nice straight shot out of the oil
pump. Also it does not get to go through what might be a 200 F aluminum front
cover passage warming it further from the temp in the sump.
