Found all the connector details on the IPAQ developers site.
Any information on the connector on the Magellan 310? is it a proprietary
device or something relatively simple?

As I said there are only two wires needed. You will need a special Magellan 310 connector.
The protocol is NEMA 0183 and a good explanation of that is available
from the March Nut & Volts article.

It's in the document that comes with the GPS 310 data cable:
Ground: pin 5 (or black)
Data out from GPS 310: Pin 2 (or orange)
Data in to GPS 310: Pin 3 (or yellow)

Power:
Ground: black
+ 3.6 Volts: red (or 9 to 16 Volts if you have the Power/data cable).

To feed the iPaq you just need pin 5 (ground) and pin 2 (data).
Pin 5 from GPS 310 to pin 5 from iPaq serial cable.
If no joy connecting pin 2 from GPS 310 to pin 3 of iPaq, then connect it to pin 2 of iPaq.

It really doesn't get simpler than that.
