I was initially concerned about that too Russell.  Then I remembered we
already have one.  Much more powerful than what we're brainstorming too.
It's called an alternator  ;-)

Keeping the fields a reasonable distance from the magnetic compass won't
cause a problem.  In fact, the magnetic influence of the engine mount and
the steel in the engine have far more effect on the mag compass than the
alternator does.
