The aviation world is now awash in folks who want to broadcast

weather information into the cockpit.  Many of the systems are
fragmentary, either in coverage or in design, and most require careful
selection to make sure the pieces and parts work together.  Perhaps the
most promising is that the XM satellite radio folks have agreed to
devote a channel to digital transmission of NEXRAD radar images and
METARs, with additional content to be determined later.  Baron Services
in Huntsville, AL (a NASA town) is doing the technical part, and made
the XM announcement on the first day of Oshkosh.  They expect hardware
by the end of the year, either a full FAA approved entertainment radio
cum digital channel for the panel, or a blind, stand-alone digital only
receiver, your choice.  The initially supported platform will be a PDA,
but they're in discussions with UPS and Garmin about supporting their
boxes as well.  Neato!
