Hello Group:
Does anyone know, what the 5 different gear ratios are in the 87 Mazda manuel 5 speed?

Does anyone know, what spline the input shaft is on an 87 Mazda manuel 5 speed? I don't have mine out yet.

A fellow named George Graham is using an 81 manuel 5 speed, that he has converted to work
as a PSRU. He said, he locks it into second gear, which gives him a 2.21 ratio. The prop spins the right
way, so more props to pick from. His web site is:     http://bfn.org/~ca266   I don't know, maybe he
is on this list already. I have never heard anyone mention this idea before. He said on his web page, he
has 170 hours on it, with no problems so far. I think it weighed about 34 lbs. He sells the
plans for $35. I'm ordering the plans Monday, so I haven't seen what he has done, to do this.
I like this idea, I would think you could eliminate the heavy flywheel, clutch, clutch disc, and just
use an automatic flywheel, and make some kind of direct coupling, something like a light weight mini spool in a rearend bolted to the automatic flywheel. What do you think?

I don't recommend this approach. George has already lost one set of gears.
The Mazda manual transmission gears are nowhere close to the torque capability
of the Ford C6 planetary. The Ford set is used the F250 250 HP turbo diesel
truck with perhaps 500 ft lbs of torque. It is not only the gears
that are of inadequate size but the prop shaft. You may have noticed
we just tested a motor/PARU plate with 600 ft pounds of torque. That same
gyro bending torque is applied to the prop shaft. Even if you use a wood
prop and the gyro torque is half that it is still too much gyro bending load for
the Mazda 7/8 inch diameter gear box output shaft. If the shaft fatigues and 
breaks you will lose a prop. Typically aircraft engines need about a 
two inch diameter or more prop shaft.
