I'd stay away from the "bushings-in-firewall" method because it appears that
everything attached to the tubing (engine, radiators, etc.) will be able to
move around more (relative to the rest of the plane), which might have some
serious implications for fitting the cowling (ducts).

You have a good point there Russell. In Perry's case he wants the ducted fan
to move with the engine. Burt Rutan built an airplane where the cooling
ducts attached to the engine poked out of the cowling. Many air cooled
engines used in fast racers such as Dave Anders and Tracy Saylor use
inner tube or wet suit material to make flexible connections to their
cooling scoops located on the cowl.
