Patrick,
My friend and I have a Polly we are putting to together. We
have decided
to use a rotary power plant. Could you provide more information
about this
plane and ask the owner to contact me off the news letter.
Thanks, Pat

Vance may have been too...uh...kind(?) with his warning
about over-sized motors.
Please give careful consideration to the effects of almost
doubling the powerplant weight on such a small airframe.
Even though the airframe is (probably) strong enough to
carry the weight, that much extra weight as a percentage of
total weight is very significant. Stall speed goes up a lot,
& as Vance said, the potential for insufficient tail
authority at slow speeds goes up, with the potential for
further increasing minimum speeds. Odds are, your landing
speed will be close that that of a twin turboprop. I had
(emphasize 'had') a friend who put an overweight motor in a
Mustang II (significantly larger airframe) & had fatally
high approach speeds & sink rate.

I have a friend in Hood River, Oregon (FBO) that has a Lyc O-320 in his
Polywagon. He has about 750 hrs on it, last talked to him at Osh. He
thought it was the only Lyc powered Poly flying. I recall him talking
specifically about the tail volume problem on this airplane and that he
solved it stating something about "..similar to early Glassairs". I can
put you in touch with him if you like.

Aloha Mike,
That would be great. I would like to hear from another Polly owner. I
have been able to locate 30 or 35 flying Polly's in the world today. Thanks,
Pat
