Subject: ADs

There is now an AD out on Lycoming Cranks that includes cranks they
just
installed to repair another AD. For 300 HP and up. The aircraft are
grounded
as of now and require a ferry permit to move to a repair facility.
These
are
high dollar aircraft and there will be hell to pay for a long time
before
hundreds of newer aircraft can be used again.

There are no AD's on Rotary engines.

Well, sort of. There is a growing list of non-official ADs for the
rotary.
Rotary glider incident # 3 (Sigurd G.) in his Glastar proves that the
leading coil ballast resistor change is mandatory if you want to avoid a
definite failure.

We have had 3 separate tension bolt failures which definitely indicates
the
need to damp the vibrations. (see my website for details on the fix I
used).

And the front cover oil passage O-ring is a known trouble spot.

The good news is that we don't have any ADs. The bad news is that we
don't
have any ADs.

Paul/Tracy/Group,
Kind of on this vein of thinking...One of the thoughts that continually
haunts me is that even though these engines are mechanically more simple
than conventional engines all of the components that we assemble around them
are potential failure points. What if we started a document that compiled
the accumulated wisdom of all the group on potential problems they had
uncovered and the remedies? Also a section on ruggedizing the
installation(selection of connectors, wiring practices, heat shielding,
safety wiring, component inspections, etc.) As each of us work through our
individual installations we will be able to review, learn from and add to
such a document. Of course it should include "for educational purposes only"
disclaimer!!!
Thoughts?

We have gone over most of this stuff in the past 4 1/2 years of the newsletter.
We knew about the tension bolt problems and had a fix last summer
when Perry Mick broke a bolt. Some people choose to ignore the simple fix
and paid the price. There are a lot of messages on the ACRE NL CD about
many of the failure modes of the peripheral systems.

I am a bit behind on shipping the CD's as I am awaiting a shipment of
CD mailers. They should be in any day now.

If you would like to do the research and compilation let me know.
I'll post it on the ACRE NL web site.
