A great little program is offered free by the author at:

It uses the microphone and sound card of a laptop computer to very
accurately measure RPM. It works in flight and on the ground. It also
worked in my truck, car and even measured the fan in my refrigerator.
Great fun to play with, and it helped me to determine that my tach was
off by 125 RPM. He also has a version available for a PDA.<
