Dave Atkins and others have been runing smog pumps for years
to drive gyro instrments. Works great. A bit heavy at about 8 pounds.

One bad thing. When they fail, they lock up solid.

They are very very reliable. Mine has 6, count them, 6 ball bearings.

Ron, I tried both aircraft vacuum pumps and the smog pump, the smog pump
worked better for me, the only downside being, as Paul mentioned, the
weight.  Mine weighs 5.6 lbs which is about 4 lbs more than a aircraft pump.
However, it provides sufficient vacuum at idle to erect the gyros which the
aircraft pump did not.
