No I wasn't sleeping.  When in a lecture that isn't (at the moment)
presenting information visually (slides, etc.), I often find it
easier to concentrate on what the speaker is saying if I look at
something uninteresting.  In this case it was my hat in my hands.
:-)

And yes, it was rather unpleasantly muggy at that particular moment.
