Linux has this powerful set of tools.
I ran fsck file system check in manual mode and it allowed me to
boot the computer.
Thanks Russell for your help with the CD burner.
It is now working.
Apparently if an error occurs after the cd burner program
starts to write the blank cd the cd becomes useless for further
writes even though there is as little as one track written.
I think that is what happened.

We use fsck -y in OS X too. Advantage is when a program crashes it
doesn't take the entire system with it and you can continue working
with everything else.
