Paul,
Due to recent HDD crash (100gig ouch) I lost most of your pics/drawings of
water pump mods. I thought I remember one of a cross section of pump where
internal mods were done to upper side. Looking into pump it is not apparent
how this works after you modify it.

It appears the flow comes ino the pump from the lower pipe, through the
impeller, into the block, out the block, up and out the top side through the
thermostat? 

Yes.

If the thermostat is closed then down through the 0.7" dia? hole?

Yes. The thermostat has two valves one closes while the other opens.
If you merely remove the thermostat you MUST plug the bypass hole.

If this is the case and we are not using a thermostat,  when we weld a plate
on the top of the pump we cover up the bypass portion? 

Yes by all means.

Or do we weld a small
plate to block off the bypass before we add the top water outlet?

Yes by all means the little plate goes in there.

Any suggestions on where to hook up a fitting for the heater return?

You will have to weld something to the new pipe so the heater return
goes through the rad.
