You got it in one Lynn. The compressed air pushes the water back
into the
system maintaining coolant pressure during decent. My bottle is
about 1/2 US
gallon.

What is coolent level in your bottle when engine is cold. I am
trying to
determine if a one quart tank will provide enough expansion space for
coolent.
My cooling system should hold approx. the same quantity as yours
since I
am using G.M. evaporators for radiators.

The coolant level in my bottle is half way when cold. I will have a look at
the level when hot this Sunday and let you know. Somebody might know the
coolant capacity of the engine and rads etc. then we could work it out with
a pencil.
Alot depends on the elasticity of your plumbing. Mine is pretty well solid.
