It may be intuitive but I still dissagree; sort of like cutting the web out of an i-beam.
Skins and surfaces are a wonderful thing. In this case they come for free and do not have enough
of a weight penalty to matter, I'd leave them in.
It took awhile for engineered lumber to catch on and for builders to trust that the strength was
in the form and the surfaces, not the mass.

It would be plenty strong enough with
holes instead of pockets.
