The hose barbs on the pump housing and the top of the rear housing originally for manifold cooling

Manifold cooling? You mean intake manifold heating. As I recall some engines have
a large hole in the intake side of the rear rotor housing that feeds water
to the intake manifold. Others use this for turbo cooling water

Hose barbs on the rear housing and the pump housing fed water to the
car heaters as I recall.

The heater port is on the rear housing but it's for 5/8" hose.  There
are small hose barbs
for 3/8" hose on the rear housing and the pump housing, and those route
coolant to some bypass
valve on the intake manifold for emissions or other reasons. I use the
one on top of the engine
at the rear to purge air from the coolant system.  About 1 foot of hose
run with a shrader valve
mounted next to the coolant filler cap. The one on the water pump I
removed and tapped
and plugged.
