It is kind of hard to tell if it is working without an Osc scope. As I recall Radio
Shack sells a cheap probe that can detect pulses. It has an LED on it
that lights if it detects a pulse. You need one of these
to check the pulse wire coming out of the pick up.

Paul, is that probe called a logic probe.  I went to radio shack and they had a digital logic
probe which could sense CMOS and TTL/LS.  is this what we need?

Sounds like it. Read the instructions and make sure it can detect a pulse.
