The engine builder likes the rubber plug style. I use only the solid
style. I
have cracked one of the plug types and had one turn back into powdered
iron.
I have never lost a solid one. You stomp on the thin ice long enough,
you get
wet.

I have heard of that happening. John at Mazdatrix mentioned they
were have trouble with those things. As I said somebody ought
to try replacing the whole works with a slotted teflon cylinder.

Leon Promet sent us a note about a year ago saying that we should
replace the corner seals (the whole plug, not just the rubber piece)
when we rebuild an aircraft engine.  I didn't understand why but thought
I would take the advice - now I am beginning to see why!  Leon also
suggested replacing the stationary gears, especially in 1988 and earlier
engines.  The 1988 and earlier engines used stationary gears that were
not hardened.  Also use the corner seal springs from the 1993 and later
engines.
