Paul, Would Teflon work? As I recall teflon isnt rated to more than 280 deg f continnous. But of
course neither is rubber, perhaps the cooling holds down the temp but I don't know exactly how.

Teflon is the highest rated plastic commonly available. Somewhere
between 600 and 800 F. For awhile all new rotor housing inner surfaces
were coated with teflon. Not only is it the highest temp plastic it
is also inert to almost all chemicals. Notice that the TES O-rings
are rated 100 degrees higher (500 F) than Viton (400 F). The rotors 
in a 13B run 500 degrees F millimeters away from the oil scraper O-rings so
this is why I am pushing so hard for teflon encapsulated silicone O-rings.

Slotted Teflon cylinders in the seal location should be tried as they
have a much much lower resonant frequency. Those tiny, fat, C shaped, 
cylindrical metal corner seals are resonating and shattering.
Teflon was not around when Felix Wankel designed the corner seals :-)
