The way we used to do it is probably not environmentally acceptable

anymore.

Twist the wires together, then hook both wires to one side of a electric
cord, put the other side of the cord in a pool of mercury under a layer

of

oil, and dip the couple junction down to the mercury. The arc welds a

nice

little ball on the end. Usually used a variac to cut the voltage down,

but a

12 volt car battery would probably work.

Why don't you use NTCs? you can operate with much higher signal levels, and
they are available and dirt cheap. I use a pair on my SOOB in the AVID for
right and left coolant temperature. My set up is linear enough for a dual
gauge.
I used NTCs a lot in labwork in the past and never had a problem.

Because I eventually want to use these things on exhaust problems.
Such as muffler design data and turbo charger turbine inlet
temps. Also as real cylinder head temp gauges. Cyl head temp can 
be up to or over 500 F a mm away from the combustion chamber.
