The way we used to do it is probably not environmentally acceptable

anymore.

Twist the wires together, then hook both wires to one side of a electric
cord, put the other side of the cord in a pool of mercury under a layer

of

oil, and dip the couple junction down to the mercury. The arc welds a

nice

little ball on the end. Usually used a variac to cut the voltage down,

but a

12 volt car battery would probably work.

Is there a reason you would not use the 2 dollar varistors from Radio Shack?
Just solder some wires on and you are ready to go. Would it be a problem
taking resistance readings with your setup? I played around with them some
on my rads, they seem to be quite accurate.

Since I had to put out the money anyway I wanted something that could
handle exhaust temps. varistors I don't think would handle 1800 F.
