Here is a little real time test program to run. It checks if you
can
acess
the hardware clock and hardware timer directly.
There is both the QB source shown here and the compiled
version attached.

If it runs on Windows 95 in a DOS window on your notebook
then the ON COMM command should work as well.



Paul, Things may have gotten simpler as I realized I already had a
cable
that hooks to the PC serial port used to load database updates from
the
PC
to the Garmin.  I'll have to check it out to see if I can get the
NEMA
data
over it - it might not be wired right for that purpose.

You will eventually have to make a new cable with three wires as
the GPS should go on the end of the daisy chain loop.

TX(out) from PC, RX (in) mod 1, TX to mod 2, RX mod 2, TX to GPS RX
GPS TX
back to PC.

No problem, I have the another Garmin Power/Data cable and holder which
I
intended to install in the aircraft in any case.  So in this case, I
simple
plug it into the end of the daisy chain. I would intend to use a D9 plug
and
then wire a the opposite polarity plug onto the daisy chain - if that
turns
out to make sense.

It is so cool if we can relate cooling temps directly to performance
data. (Pardon the pun :-))

I agree, more meaningful to know the temps if you know the performance data.
Now I would think we should be able to back TAS out of the GPS data. If we
know the mag heading, mag variation and ground speed and track,  I would
think we could determine TAS. I'll have to look at the old wind trangle and
the GPS vectors.  Then if we capture rpm and air/fuel mixture and manifold
pressure and....  WAIT a minute! looks like to me we're backing into a full
data collection system {:>).

Let me fiddle with what you have sent and get back to you later today.
