Paul, I see that you are a firm believer in the speed and effeciency of an O/S like MS-DOS as I am.
Never seen an O/S that beats it.
Quick basic is Platinum as well.
The O/S we are writing is a 32bit P-Mode Multitasker that is almost a clone of MS-Dos 6.22. It even
uses the very same file system as MS-Dos does, only it's Fat32. It runs from a floppy and to the
average user it would just be Dos.
MS Dos is the easiest O/S to program for and under as well.

I remember in the old days before Windows, everyone said that MSDOS
wasn't a real
operating system, as compared to CPM. Did it evolve into a "real"
operating system?
It certainly became the standard and CPM went away.

Actually Microsoft took the best of CPM and added the FAT file system and made DOS the best operating
system ever conceived. In those days programmers wrote small fast tight code, and the good quality programs
never crashed themselves, nor crashed DOS. It's only real limitations is that it cannot do true
multistasking, and it doesn't know anything about memory above 1meg. Real mode limitations.
I am certainly not a Microsoft fan, but I give them high praise for the DOS operating system, it's just
what they have done since that is bitter. And Paul is so right, can't beat it for cheap real time O/S.
And if you haven't noticed, it is still the O/S of choice. You use it almost daily if not daily. It runs
your gasoline pumps, your ATM's, your VCR's, your microwave ovens, your, your, on and on. And the embedded
guys love it.

Speaking of Windoze. W98 says I have COM2 and it is working.
Modem on COM5.
When I try to run a terminal program in DOS it says there is no COM2
but it does see COM1. Checkit in DOS at first found COM1 and said
it was OK sans loop back. When I connected TX to RX ( 9 pin conn
pin2 to pin3 loop back) it said input register failed. When I run
checkit now it says no COM ports?????
Yet the terminal program still sees COM1. Nothing is working off
COM1. No GPS no data acq no echo in terminal program. Did I kill it?
Just tried the GPS with another computer on COM1 and the
GPS is working fine. Must be a bad com port on my IBM.
