Both Ed and I are having problems accessing the serial ports while

in DOS (7.x?). Ed is running 95 and I am running 98. I can send you a GPS
simulator designed to out put GPS data continuously just like a real
GPS and you can run that in an old DOS computer and hook it to the
RS232 on a notebook running 95 or 98 DOS and see the problem for yourself.
Here is a short program that reads the GPS data coming
in from a serial port and records the arrival time down to a millisecond.
This program works fine with data from a real GPS and an old DOS 5.0
computer.

I do not know if this has been covered but,,,
When running W98 DOS are you booted in DOS mode and not just using a DOS
window or command line under windows?  Windows likes to control the ports.
 I run a W95 DOS emulation program under W95 DOS which does not work from
the command line.  I also use procomm DOS version for just about anything
that resembles a RS232 port.  This would not help with access the port from
code but does wonders if you like to see little data bits run across the
screen.

We sell off computer equipment by the truck loads.  I will see about a DOS
laptop donation and will assume 286, 1meg RAM, 20meg harddrive or larger
will work.

Yes anything like that would be fine. Apparently a lot of current notebook
makers are taking liberties with the PC standard hardware specifications.
