If it was a rotary (and perhaps some other types of cars) the
thermostat
is more than a simple on and off switch. If you remove the thermostat
in
a rotary most if not all the water flow will bypass the radiator.
There is a
by pass passage in the water pump that MUST be plugged.

You can take out the thermostat in a GM engine and run it that way. The
engine temp will just be slow
to come up, and in the winter, you better start it up a while before you
get in expecting heat:-) But
the engine is designed to run around 190 degrees for emissions sake, so
the computer thinks the engine
is still cold because the coolant temp is low, and will richen the
mixture for you.

I think it was an old 60ish Ford Falcon wagon with a 260 V8 it's been a long
time. Just thought that the water was going through the radiator so fast
that it didnt have time to transfer the heat.
