I'm working on building the intake manifold for my 13B engine. I purchased
some 1-1/2 and 1-1/4 aluminum 180 degree pipe bends. The 1-1/4 bends just
clears the top of the engine but the 1-1/2 bends sets a bit high and I'm a
bit tight on engine height/cowl clearance. I'm not entirely satisfied with
using aluminum pipe for the entire manifold. One approach that I am
considering is to begin with aluminum pipe (straight piece welded to the
manifold plate) and then transition to PVC pipe. If heat transfer is an
issue there are rubber couplers (straight or with 90 degree bends). The
material is light weight, cheap and there are a couple different bend radius
options. What are the downside issues of using this low tech solution?

Well I went through all that and that is why I am spending many many hours
doing a pattern for sand casting a manifold. The hard part is getting
a smooth transition from the oval ports to a round pipe while keeping the
pipes right down on the top of the rotor housings. I destroyed several
stock manifolds in the processing thinking I could weld something to the
a cut down stock manifold. WRONG!

Hang in there I will have some castings in a week or two.
Save those pipe bends. You can use them with the new cast
manifold.
