Not recommended but has been done. There is no space savings. Back in
the
old days 30 years ago when we had distributors there was a height
advantage.
Those days are gone forever using crank angle sensors or e-shaft
triggers.
You just ask for cooling and oil feed problems if you rotate the
engine.

3.) How much weight can be saved by using aluminum or other metal
when
possible ?

About 50 pounds for all three end and intermediate housing. They will
cost
you $4500 alone.

4.) what are the pertinent differences between the 2.85 reducing
unit vs
the 2.2
PSRU-------weight, performance, serviceability, robustness of design
?

Everything is pretty much the same except the 2.85 will allow you
to rev the engine up to 7500 for takeoff gaining 10% to 20% in
increased HP.

5.) What do you expect a final installation to weigh ?

Firewall forward 300 to 330 pounds depending on how well you
design the motor mounts and the cooling system

6.) Are there after market ignition systems which are lighter than
stock
?

Yes. The coils used on the GM LT1 Corvette V8 can be fired by Tracy's
EFI/IGN
ignition system

7.) how much does the starter weigh ? Flywheel ?

Between 5 and 7 pounds for the starter. A true flywheel is
not used. An auto transmissions flex plate is normally used
and I am not sure about the weight. I would say under three pounds.


8. How much weight does a turbocharger add to the installation ?

About 35 pounds but you save 10 to 20 pounds by not having a muffler.

In a typical side by side airplane and an NA rotary only about 2/3 rd
of the volume of the cowl is used. The right side is nearly empty.

I intend using some of that space for an intercooler.

This is a picture of Chuck Dunlap's RV6. Below the intake
plenum on the left there is pretty much nothing.
The sheet metal duct on the right feeds the oil cooler
mounted on the firewall. The rad is under the engine more
or less.

Not more than a pound or two with the after market coils.

Yes. No. A stock 2nd gen intercooler is only a couple of pounds.
