I hear the rotary is loud,hot,non-fuel efficient, and vibrates . is true?
are there simple
> fixes? i'm shooting for the smoothest, quietest ride, plenty of power,
and some what descent
> economy. am i looking in the right place?
The rotary has exhaust gas temps about 200 to 250 degrees higher than a
piston engine. 1400 VS 1600 to 1650. Stainless muffler and exhaust tubing is
a must.
The power is as good as a 360 and can be much more, depending on how much
time and money you have. There is nothing in a piston engine even close to
the smoothness of a rotary. Closer to an electric motor. The rotary will run
further lean of peak EGT than a piston engine and can attain similar or
better mileage. The apex seal problem of the 70s is now a wives tale. There
are reduction units and injection controllers on the shelf. Total units
flying are over 2,000 hours in the air. Many are being installed in pushers.
Many more projects with rotaries are under way.
