I came to the same conclusion when I was considering the two piece planetary
casing but yours is a better idea, after all the casing is designed for that
particular use.

However I'm not quite sure on how you see the shoulder bolt working - in
reality it's only a pin holding the planetaries in place, I was worried a
bolt might squish the casing and reduce the freeplay. Paul a small drawing
would be appreciated on how you see the bolt would be best applied.
Also how the H... does one remove those little spring pins.

I'll see if I can find time to do a sketch.

Try taping them and use a screw to extract them.
Some are solid and they are too small to do that.
In a case like that you might have to mill the
planet carrier to get access to the other end.

If you can get them out about an 1/8 of an inch
you might be able to tig weld something to
the end of them and then use that to pull them out.

You could also just leave them in there and drill the shaft
out for a bolt. Use a micro torch to kill the heat treat
on the pin.

BTW If those shafts are too hard to drill take the whole
works to an EDM shop and have them eat six bolt holes in the shafts.
