I fly a Long EZ Paul and that 326 lb installation for the rotary engime

from

Powersport could probably work but I would like it to be lighter. At

that

weight, its basically the same weight as a Lycoming 0-360, marginal in

my

application. I have heard of potential weight savings of 80 to 100 lbs

with

appropriate attention to weight savings for the rotary. That would make

the

engine incredibly attractive; 215 hp 250 lbs plus the prop would be

close to

what I have now in weight plus 55 hp. Believe me , that would work. In

my

application, the weight is very important.

There are about a dozen ways to specify engine weight and I don't know which
way Powersport did it but I would assume that this is Firewall Forward
weight.
I have seen 3 examples of FWF weights of Lyc O - 320 installations in
certified airplanes.  The weights were arrived at by actually unbolting
everything forward of the firewall (not including cowl or prop) and weighing
it.  These were all on Cessnas 172 of various years.  I think  Lycoming says
the O - 320 weighs 276 pounds.  The actual FWF weights measured were 355,
370 & 385.

Moral of the story is that I would not necessarily conclude that the
Powersport engine weighs about the same as an O - 360.  It might, but their
326 lb number does not prove it.
