Fair enough, but if I am  a businessman and I can make a better mousetrap
for less $, lighter weight , same or better gas mileage, lower emissions,
at some point CNN ( or Dan Rather ) is going to proclaim me a visionary, in
the vanguard !  Maybe there will be some movement with the renesis engine.

I agree it will happen sooner or later. Perhaps the mileage 
improvement on the RX8 will be the trigger. Perhaps it
will take a supercharger to get the desired low RPM
torque. Engine life is no longer an issue. Most piston
engines will go 200,000 miles in light duty car service.

BTW the cost of manufacturing a car is directly related to
the weight so the RX8 will make a nice profit if sales exceed
the break even point. 

I think the main trigger would be something like the Jaguar 
XKS with a three or a four rotor. That would open a lot of eyes. 
Ford/Mazda could do this at very little cost. The Jag is a bit 
heavy but that would not matter much with a super charged 
four rotor. They don't need to make a profit. The cost could come
out of the advertising budget.
