Actually, not as simple as one might assume.

For example, Mazda's implementation of the Wankel uses assymetrically sized cooling passages to help the engine avoid taking on a banana shape.  If one were to try to run it backwards, the cooling

passages would be exactly wrong,

and the engine would have a tremendous tendency to bend into a banana shape.

Only if you ran the water thru the hot side and then back thru the cold side. Just feed the water thru both sides to the rear housing, and take it out there and send it back to the radiator. That is a little difficult to do on a car because of the
firewall.

Mazda passes the hot water through the cold side to warm it up.
