OK Tom you do the pattern and work a deal with Tracy. It will
save him some machining time and a bunch of long 1/4 bolts not
to mention a few pounds. I will help with initial financing,
act as liaison with the foundry and provide some marketing
help through the news letter.

If it looks a bit like the Ross is should as Ross got it
pretty much right. All walls are .2 inch except where
necessary for bearing mounts.

BTW it loads the gear set through the back just like a car
transmission. It can be retrofitted with Tracy gear sets already
out there if someone would like to upgrade. Me for one.

That's the spirit Tom. Other than making the pattern the initial investment
is the main stumbling block. Once we get the castings and the cash flow
begins everything gets a lot easier.

BTW Tracy, if you make this a 2.85:1 you won't have to machine all
those little teeth to hold the planet carrier fixed not to mention
of course drilling all those long 1/4 holes.

How is the 2.85:1 ratio achieved?  Is the same ford gear used in a different configuration?

I am not entirely sure about that. There are several Ford C6/A4OD gear sets.
What I am sure about is the ring gear is held stationary while power
is removed from the planet carrier. One set I have here in my 
office gives about a 3.05:1  ratio with a 2.15 " PD sun gear 
and 4.5 " PD ring gear.

Another Ford set I have here with a 1.95" PD sun gear and a 4.7 " PD ring 
gear gives over 3.5:1.

I think the set Tracy's uses on the 2.17:1  has a 1.95" PD sun gear and 
a 4.45 " PD ring gear giving about 3.2:1 in this configuration.

I don't have Tracy gear box here in my office so I can't check
the sun gear pitch diameter. If anybody has one handy please measure
it and let me know.

As you can see there are a lot of Ford part combinations with
the individually parts not necessarily being interchangeable.

I am sure Tracy knows a heck of a lot more about this than I do.

One of my projects for the new year is to get a catalog from
Slauson on all the Ford gear sets.
