I have seen an interesting study on oil filters. The comparison
of
all
commercially available
filters were used with interesting results. The high end of oil
filters
was those available from
Amsoil. They were superior in filtration capability but they came
at
a
price. Of all the available
filters on the market, Fram and Wicks tested the worst with poor
materials and common failure of
parts, like bypass valves. Interesting enough I got the data
from a
rotary enthusiast off of his
web site. It showed for the money that AC-Delco rated highest in
materials and quality for the
money of most availabe filters. Mazda uses superior filters as
well
but
that is usually a dealer
item and will generally pay as much as an amsoil filter. The
remote
set
ups that we use lend
themselves to easy amsoil adaptability. I am partial to the
lubricants
that they produce but I was
not involved in the study. I am just the messenger.

Let me clarify one part of Doug's message. One of the filters that
was
labeled as less well made was from "Wix," not "Wicks," the aircraft
parts
supplier in Highland, IL.
I think the survey to which Doug refers is the same one found at

Lets clear the air on this subject. That study has been around for at
least 4 (or more) years, I remember reading it when I got my FD. Since
then many of the filters have had their design changed or updated. I use
the Fram filters in my FD (94 13Brew tt) based on more recent
information. It does appear to be a very comphrensive study of the
filters which makes it all the more believable.
Don't base any decisions on that old study. Mr. Ciriani (whose site that
is) and I have had direct communications on this and other subjects.
Read that study with a grain of salt and then confirm it elsewhere (like
Consumers Report or some other car mag).
