Ignition coils.
I was fortunate for Jerry Hey to send me a set of RX-7 ignition coil and I would like to use these
for an experimental engine, built from scratch, and need to know how to wire them up. Perhaps
Tracy will know how Mazda has build these.

For my use, ignition is required to two plug, either simultaneously, or at a slight offset of
perhaps 2 to 5 degrees. Either way is good. An offset firing would provide more freedom in
testing.

The coils I got are as follows:
?Leading Plugs?. This is one coil with two plug outlets and has one connector with two wires. I
gather these fire simultaneously. Likely at 135 degrees of eccentric shaft rotation to fire both
rotors. One spark for real and the second spark during exhaust/intake stoke. Is this correct?

BTW, for the trigger mechanism, is there a 1.5:1 gear reduction to have a 180 degree spacing of
the trigger wheel to initiate ignition?

?Trailing Plugs?. These are two coils with one plug outlet each and it has two connector plugs,
one with two, the other with four wires. These can probably be fired at different times and likely
fire at every 270 degrees of eccentric shaft rotation. Is this correct?

Both coils sets are mounted on an aluminium enclosure. What is in there?

What else do I need to get the coils to work? Can these coils be used for an inductive system or
for a capacitive discharge system as I trust Mazda is using?

My present set up is a RO80 distributor with two sets of points. I use a 12 V battery and some
switches with two after market HEI coils. A very standard inductive ignition system. So far,
ignition was not very good, which can have many other reasons, of course.

The wire colours are as follows:
T1 and T2: two prong plug: both are brown-tan;
four-prong plug: pink, grey, yellow and cream, (yellow beside the grey; cream
beside the pink)
L1 & L2: two prong plug: tan and pink; plus a single black connector.

For simultaneous firing the Leading coils alone is likely ok. For off timing firing I likely will
need the trailing plug assembly. However, first I need to know what wire has what connection.
Also, are the mating wire connectors available at my local Mazda dealer?

Can you identify how the coil sets work and how they are wired by Mazda? Your
help will be very much appreciated.

Rolf Pfeiffer
