Finn,
Are you sure you have the correct starter?  The 87 - 92 manual transmission
starter is the correct part.  From your problem description, it sounds like
you may have the automatic version.  The manual part rotates the solenoid up
close to the body of the gear housing.

Ah, that explains it! I just re-read your instructions: auto transmission flywheel but manual
transmission starter! Since we know the flywheel is correct and they both came from the same car
it must be an automatic transmission starter.
Can I assume that if I cut .42" off the bottom of the mount plate it will not result in a starter
mounting weakness? In other words, will the two bolts and semi-circle of the engine mount plate be
enough to hold the starter in place? Anything to avoid  cowling fiber glass work :)  ... although,
lowering the oil cooler a bit would give more clearance between it and the oil pan.
