I use a Toyota Tercel ring gear, it is 9.5 inches, also check with
napa as they have a book with ring gears with the diameters.
  Also I use a 94 Subaru legacy starter that only weighs 6 pounds.
  The Tercel ring gear will mesh with ether the Subaru or the Mazda starter.

Ken,
You said that the Tercel ring gear will mesh with the Mazda or Subaru starter.  Does this mean that the Subaru starter will mesh with the Mazda ring gear? (sounds like it should)
