I'm configuring the oil pickup tube which basically comes straight down to
the bottom of the a 7" deep sump on the 20B. I'm not comfortable with that
just supported from the flange, and I want to include a brace. My pan
configuration does not allow reaching to the bolt pad on the intermediate
housing where the stock pickup tube support bracket is.
Looking at the bottom of the rotor housing toward the exhaust port side
there is a raised pad, I guess about 3/4" square. Looks like a spot to drill
and tap for a 6mm bolt. I'm wondering how deep I can go there, seems to be a
tubular gallery? running along inside the housings there. Is that a return
oil porting or what? Can someone tell me how much material thickness is
there?
The alternate is to drill and tap the support web that goes to the side of
the rotor housing.
Next time I'll rebuild my own engine and I'll know all this stuff. Did I say
"next time"? Yikes!
Someone suggested in the past flaring (bell mouth) the oil pickup tube to
reduce entrance loss. Seems like a good idea, but how does one do that and
get that screen basket on there?

That is only about 1/2 inch thick before you get into the lower oil
gallery. If you go a bit further outboard and use the flying buttress
you can be sure you are not drilling into something.
